چکیده

Geotechnical engineering is a core discipline within civil engineering that supports the infrastructure development which underpins modern society. The simulation of realistic geotechnical design at undergraduate level is often restricted to routine calculation-based methods reinforced by simple element laboratory tests which fail to provide a holistic learning experience. Using the latest research techniques, laboratory teaching can now offer the opportunity for students to test small-scale physical models which are representative of larger real world full-scale engineering problems. To provide greater connectivity between geotechnical theory and design, a small-scale 1.1m diameter teaching centrifuge has been developed. This enables observation of the behaviour of small-scale models tested under increased gravity to be directly related to fullscale field conditions. Accompanying educational resources have also been developed. An additional core objective was to promote widening participation amongst other higher education institutions and this has been achieved by ensuring that the centrifuge is highly cost-effective, built from standard off-the-shelf parts and features supporting documentation in the form of a “how-to” guide which details the centrifuge design, engineering drawings and the manufacture and installation process for technology transfer.

Centrifuge Modelling With Transparent Soil and Laser Aided Imaging

Transparent synthetic soils have been developed as a soil surrogate to enable internal visualization of geotechnical processes in physical models. While significant developments have been made to enhance the methodology and capabilities of transparent soil modelling, the technique is not yet exploited to its fullest potential. Tests are typically conducted at 1 g in small bench size models, whi...

Centrifuge modeling of energy foundations – effect of seasonal temperature fluctuation and soil state

Energy foundations can reduce carbon footprint and lead to energy savings. Understanding the process of heat migration in soil is therefore of great interest in the field of geotechnical engineering. However, limited literature exists on the thermo-dynamic interaction and structural performance of an energy foundation and the surrounding soil. Lab testing of energy foundations remains inexpensi...

Centrifuge modeling of rocking-isolated inelastic RC bridge piers

Experimental proof is provided of an unconventional seismic design concept, which is based on deliberately underdesigning shallow foundations to promote intense rocking oscillations and thereby to dramatically improve the seismic resilience of structures. Termed rocking isolation, this new seismic design philosophy is investigated through a series of dynamic centrifuge experiments on properly s...

Segmented Height Field and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics in Erosion Simulation

1 Motivation The New Orleans area levee failures during Hurricane Katrina drew media attention to an important problem in Civil Engineering. The emphasis of our work is on earthen levees, dams, and embankments. A major cause of failures of such structures is overtopping, which causes erosion to the point of breaching the crest. Our research focuses on simulating the initial small-scale features...

Design and analysis procedure for centrifuge devices with a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system

Structural analysis of new devices to be used in centrifuge facilities can be a challenging task. Initial calculations, based on simple basic static principles, are usually used. However, as devices placed in a geotechnical centrifuge are often complex structures, advanced analysis methods to assess their performance under enhanced acceleration fields are desirable. This paper presents the anal...
